Britain’s finest young butchers are being called up for a chance to showcase their skills and win a place with Team GB on the World Butchers’ Challenge stage.

Dalziel’s Butchers Show, Harrogate, which takes place on 19 May 2019, has been chosen to host the British heats to determine which young butchers will compete in the finals of the World Champion Butcher Apprentice and Young Butcher competitions in Sacramento, USA, 2020.

Young Butcher contestants must be under 31 years of age and entrants into the Butcher Apprentice category must still be working through their trade apprenticeship at the time of competing.

Like the World Butchers’ Challenge, entrants to both categories have just two hours and fifteen minutes to break down a range of primal cuts into a world class display of pre-determined products and their own creations.

Attracting young people into the butchery industry is a key focus of Dalziel’s Butchers Show being held at the Yorkshire Event Centre in Harrogate, explained Danny Upson, Dalziel’s retail butchery sales director.

It’s vital for the development of the industry that we get behind our young butchers and encourage their craft, which is one of the world’s oldest skills. There’s a new generation of craft butchers serving up brilliant new techniques and product ideas, and we’re pleased to provide the platform to showcase their skills and creativity.

Ryan Briggs, of A J Learmonth Butchers, Jedburgh, competed with Team GB in the World Champion Apprentice Challenge at the World Butchers’ Challenge last year.  Since then his career has taken off, explained Ryan.

I’ve had offers to work all over Britain and an opportunity to go to New Zealand for a year to work.  But I’ve chosen to stay here and fully focus on my future at the shop where I’m getting more involved with managing.
— Ryan Briggs

Dalziel’s flagship Butchers Show, Harrogate is likely to be the UK’s biggest gathering of independent retail butchers with over 1000 expected to attend.

As a dedicated trade show for the retail butchery sector, the event will showcase the very latest products and innovations from leading suppliers and manufacturers.

Over 35 trade exhibitors will include key partners Lucas Ingredients, MRC, Verstegen and Devro.

The show’s aim is to inspire butchers with new and exciting ideas, explained Danny Upson.

We want to create the ultimate experience for butchers to help them drive their business forward against a very challenging market, where they’re competing against major multiples.  This is the place to be for independent retail butchers who want to stay ahead of the game.
— Danny Upson

Show highlights include Team GB in action as they prepare for the World Butchers Challenge 2020 in Sacramento, in a new ‘Ready, Steady, Cut… Butchery Challenge’.

And winners of The Great British Butchers Awards will be announced in an ‘Oscars’ style ceremony.
