WBC welcome Van Hessen as newest partner

We’re shaking things up around here and as such, we’re thrilled to announce Van Hessen as the latest partner to join the WBC community, taking on naming rights of the “World’s Best Gourmet Sausage’ category.

Van Hessen is the leading global player in the harvesting, processing and distribution of natural casings, meat products and pharmaceutical products. Van Hessen is, together with Devro and Bioiberica and, part of the Food & Pharma division of SARIA.

For those unfamiliar, SARIA is ‘a down-to-earth global player and sustainability expert’ bringing together a group of companies who manufacture quality product for use in human and animal foodstuffs, agriculture, aquaculture, and industrial applications. SARIA also produces biofuels and renewable energy and provides services for farming and the food industry.

This new partnership means, all teams will have the chance to put their best foot, ahem we mean sausage, forward into the following award categories:

  • Devro World’s Best Beef Sausage

  • Devro World’s Best Pork Sausage

  • Van Hessen World’s Best Gourmet Sausage

The Devro and Van Hessen World’s Best Sausage Awards are not compulsory for teams, but we strongly encourage getting involved. Each team may put forward a sausage from their display for each of these prizes. All sausages are to be made from the trim created during the three hours of the contest. Trim will not be provided. The sausages will be judged the day following the WBC by a panel of experts in both raw and cooked form on the following:

  • Texture

  • Aroma

  • Taste

The Devro World’s Best Beef and Pork sausages must be made using Devro collagen casings supplied, and the Van Hessen World’s Best Gourmet Sausage must be made using Van Hessen natural casings which will also be supplied. Teams will be supplied with both casings for practices in the lead up to the competition.

Van Hessen, Devro and Bioiberica use animal raw materials to create their wide range of products, which are ubiquitous and universal, but anything but ordinary, which has absolute parallels to what our butchery teams are aiming to achieve during the competition timeframe.
